Easter in Germany is a joyful, colorful time filled with traditions that bring families together and celebrate the arrival of spring.

Whether you're new to Germany or simply looking for fun ways to enjoy the holiday with your kids, here are some of the most beloved German Easter traditions and activities:

1. Decorate an Ostereierbaum (Easter Egg Tree)

One of the most charming Easter traditions in Germany is decorating an Ostereierbaum

Families hang colorful, hand-painted eggs on branches (either outdoors or in a vase at home).

It’s like a mini Easter Christmas tree! Let your kids get creative painting real or wooden eggs, and then proudly display them on your own Easter tree.

Tip: You can find egg painting kits and wooden eggs at local craft stores, at DM or Rossmann or at an Easter market.

2. Set Up a Backyard (or Indoor) Egg Hunt

In Germany, the Osterhase (Easter Bunny) traditionally hides eggs, candies, and small gifts in gardens or around the home for kids to find on Easter morning.

If you don’t have outdoor space, a living room egg hunt is just as exciting!

Idea: Fill woven baskets with some “fake” paper grass (also called Ostergras) and add small treats or toys on top. Next, hide them around the house and let the hunt begin!

3. Try Traditional Easter Treats

Easter in Germany comes with its own delicious lineup of festive foods. Let your kids try:

  • Osterbrot — a sweet, fruity bread often topped with almonds

  • Osterlamm — lamb-shaped cakes dusted with powdered sugar

  • Carrot-themed snacks — from carrot muffins to veggie platters, a fun way to balance out the chocolate

You’ll find many of these treats at local bakeries and Easter markets!

4. Easter Crafts Afternoon

Set aside an afternoon for Easter-themed crafts. Some fun, easy ideas include:

  • Making bunny masks or egg garlands

  • Finger-painting Easter cards for family

  • Decorating hard-boiled eggs with natural dyes or stickers

Bonus: Play some springtime music and make it a family crafting party!

5. Experience an Osterfeuer (Easter Bonfire)

In many parts of Germany, communities gather for Osterfeuer — large bonfires lit on Easter Saturday or Sunday. These fires are meant to chase away winter and welcome spring. Many events include music, food stalls, and family-friendly activities.

Check your local area for scheduled bonfires and bring the kids for a cozy, festive evening outdoors.

6. Visit an Easter Market (Ostermarkt)

Think Christmas market, but with a spring twist! Many German towns host Ostermärkte featuring:

  • Handmade Easter crafts and decorations

  • Local foods and treats

  • Kid-friendly activities like egg painting or pony rides

It’s the perfect way to get into the Easter spirit while supporting local artisans.

Easter in Germany is full of warmth, creativity, and togetherness. Whether you're hunting for eggs in the garden or enjoying Osterbrot at brunch, there are plenty of ways to celebrate with kids of all ages.
