As in many big German cities, it can be challenging to find a midwife in Düsseldorf.

So we teamed up with Jenna Davis to tell you everything you need to know about how to find a midwife (Hebamme) in Düsseldorf. (Learn what you need to know about midwife care in Germany).

Jenna is the founder of Life in Düsseldorf, which is a treasure trove for internationals moving to the city. She is also a mom of two.

Jenna’s tip number one is to start early – best as soon as you have your positive pregnancy test in hand! This may sound crazy but it will give you the best chance at finding a midwife.

Her second tip is to start from the bottom of the available midwife lists – since most women start from the top, this can give you an advantage, especially in finding a midwife who speaks your language.

Where Can You Find a Midwife in Düssseldorf?

Here are some resources to help you locate a midwife in your area:

  • Kidsgo Magazine: Offers lists of midwives in your region.

  • Hebammenzentrale Düsseldorf: A midwife agency that can connect you with a midwife in your neighborhood (free of charge).

  • Do a Google search for midwives (Hebammen) and midwife practices (Hebammenpraxis) in your neighborhood

  • Ask your chosen hospital for a list of postpartum (Wochenbett) midwives

There are also some Germany-wide platform that you can use for your midwife search:

    • Provides an overview of available midwives in your area

    • You can filter by the type of services you need as well as languages

    • Based on your due date, a list of midwives with capacities are listed

    • You can contact as many of them as you like via email or phone

    • The platform is only available in German

    • “The largest midwife-platform in Germany, a cooperation with the German Midwives' Association”

    • Provides an overview of available midwives in your area

    • You can send up to 5 requests via the system – if a midwife declines your request, you can send a new one

    • Available in English and German

    • For continuous care as well as one-off appointments, also via video

    • Also for courses

    • You can filter by the type of services you need as well as languages

    • Unfortunately, no details or bio is provided for the midwives

  • Midiaid

    • Shows midwives with potential capacity matching your search criteria

    • You can send one message for free or upgrade to access more features (from €19.95)

    • You can also have your details entered into a search list so midwives can contact you if they have availability

    • Available in German and English

  • GKV Spitzenverband: Hebammenliste

    • List of midwives searchable by postcode

    • No availability listed

    • Available in German only

Tip: It's best to search for a midwife in your own neighborhood. This makes it easier for both of you to meet up and ensures quicker assistance if urgent help is needed.

Despite it being hard to find a midwife, we recommend you still make sure the midwife you found is a good fit and that you will be comfortable in having her accompany you in this exciting but vulnerable time!

Good luck!
